Nightstand Necessities: Part One

What is the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning, and the last thing you see before you go to sleep?  Good guess, but no, I’m not referring to the love of your life. I’m talking about your nightstand!

Given that we begin and end our busy days in bed, our nightstands are sort of like our trusty sidekicks!  A well-organized and styled nightstand can give us the boost that we need first thing in the morning, or offer us that sense of calm before we shut down for the evening.  Conversely, a disorganized and unpleasant nightstand can have the opposite effect.

The space atop, and within our nightstands is coveted real estate, so it is essential that the items atop, and within be worthy of that space; however, what this looks like will be unique to the individual, as well as the size and structure of one’s nightstand.

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what one should include atop their nightstand, the five items below are what I prefer to keep atop mine (which for reference, is this spacious beauty from Ikea).

With respect to what I keep within my nightstand, well, there are a few more than five items, so I decided to split this post into two, and intend to share next week.

Without further ado, I give you what is atop my nightstand:

A Reading Lamp

Easy access to light is not only essential in case of emergency, but also important if you like to read, plan or journal before bed.  While the size and design should be suited to your style preference and space allotted, it is important to only use bulbs that emit a soft, natural light, so as not to interfere with sleep.

While not the most glamorous of reading lamps, the one I currently have on my nightstand is from Ikea, and it is simple, clean and functional.

A Water Carafe

Having quick access to water before, during or after slumber, is an essential for me.  Sipping some water before bed helps me awake less dehydrated, or if I awake in the middle of the night with a tickle in my throat, I don’t need to travel to the kitchen and disturb the household.  I have also read that some like to have a glass of water by their bedside in the morning to jumpstart their water intake, or to take vitamins or medication first thing.

While one can use any glass, I prefer using a water carafe, not only because it keeps my water dust-free, but it also adds an elegant touch to the space.  There are many options available; however, I have used this one from Crate and Barrel for sometime now.

An Ultrasonic Diffuser

Diffusing essential oils as you drift off, or come to, not only offers a therapeutic effect, but also adds a spa-like luxury to your space.

While many recommend lavender before bed, and something like citrus in the morning, I think it is all about personal preference.

I recently purchased my diffuser from Indigo; however, you can find quality diffusers at all price points on Amazon.

A Trinket Tray

While I store the majority of my jewelry collection in a jewelry box, I prefer to have quick access to my daily jewelry (namely my engagement ring/wedding band, my watch, and my pearl studs), which is why I keep those items on a trinket tray atop my nightstand.

While the one I use does not appear to be available any longer, there are many lovely options available at all price points.  Two of my favourites are this ring cloche from Pottery Barn and or this small crystal bowl from Tiffany and Co.

An Evening Read

I say evening read, because I am the type of person that needs something simple and calming to digest before bed.  While I read different genres during the day, reading a thriller or something that requires a great deal of thinking does not quiet my mind.  So, I tend to opt for light-hearted fiction as I drift off to sleep.

Editor’s Note: Occasionally, especially during the spring and summer months, I also keep a fresh bloom or two atop my nightstand, and reorganize the space to accommodate.

Stay tuned next week for part two of this series, where I will discuss the necessities that I keep within my nightstand.

What necessities do you keep atop your nightstand?  Leave me a comment below, as I would love to know.

Wishing you a lovely week!
